July 24, 8:00 pm: New England Contra Dance
It's not everyday you can get a slice of historic New England culture, hear rousing, traditional,
live music while having a truly great time with friends new and old. Oh yes, and it's good
exercise as well! Actually though you can get all of this if you join us tonight! Byron Ricker
will be calling the dance(s) and Fish of a Feather, a fun local band, will provide the tunes.
Byron has been calling dances around New England for years and is adept at making the
dances fun for both new and experienced dancers. The first settlers in New England brought
with them social dancing in lines and squares and circles. For hundreds of years this was the
mainstay of entertainment in both rural and urban communities. Neighbors would get together
in barns, big farmhouse kitchens, and town halls. A few people playing fiddle or accordion,
piano or flute would provide the music and everyone would dance the steps they had learned
by watching and dancing since they could walk. At some point the tradition began to include
a caller to prompt the dancers. Do-si-do! Circle left!. At AMC's Pinkham Notch Visitor Center
